Jeremiah Smith, a freshman wide receiver for Ohio State, has garnered significant accolades following an exceptional debut season with the Buckeyes. His performance has earned him titles such as the Big Ten’s Wide Receiver of the Year and Freshman of the Year, as well as first-team All-American honors from USA Today.

Throughout the season, Smith amassed 1,227 receiving yards and 14 touchdowns, surpassing the freshman records previously held by Cris Carter. His contributions were instrumental in Ohio State’s successful campaign, culminating in a national championship victory.

Despite these achievements, Smith was notably overlooked for the Football Writers Association of America’s (FWAA) Offensive Freshman of the Year award, which was instead awarded to South Carolina quarterback LaNorris Sellers. This decision has been met with surprise by many, given Smith’s record-breaking season.

Smith’s journey to collegiate stardom began at Chaminade-Madonna College Preparatory School in Florida, where he was recognized as the top-ranked recruit in the 2024 class. His transition to college football has been seamless, with standout performances throughout the season. Notably, in the Rose Bowl against Oregon, Smith recorded seven receptions for 187 yards and two touchdowns, earning him the game’s Offensive MVP honors.

His on-field success has been complemented by numerous awards, including Big Ten Receiver of the Year and Freshman of the Year, as well as first-team All-American selections by USA Today and ESPN.

While the FWAA’s decision has sparked debate, Smith’s freshman year remains one of the most impressive in recent college football history. His record-setting achievements have solidified his status as a rising star in the sport, and he is poised to continue making significant contributions to Ohio State’s future endeavors.
