Tragic News: Three reasons the Cowboys should re-sign CB Stephon Gilmore

The Dallas Cowboys have remained consistent in their cautious approach to free agency. After several months of minimal activity, this is typically the period when the Cowboys start considering potential additions, often signing players to inexpensive, one-year contracts.

The Cowboys could benefit from addressing areas like defensive tackle, where they lack depth, and running back, where they have players but lack standout talent beyond Ezekiel Elliott and Rico Dowdle. However, there is an opportunity in the free agent market that they should not overlook: veteran cornerback Stephon Gilmore, who played for the Cowboys in 2023, is still available. Here are three compelling reasons why Dallas should consider re-signing him.

Gilmore joined the Cowboys after a resurgent season with the Indianapolis Colts in 2022, where he recorded a career-high 66 tackles and two interceptions. In 2023, he surpassed his previous tackle record with 68 and added another two interceptions. His contributions were crucial for the Cowboys, especially after All-Pro cornerback Trevon Diggs suffered an ACL tear before Week 3.

One of Gilmore’s standout performances came in Week 14 against the Philadelphia Eagles. He showcased his skills reminiscent of his 2019 Defensive Player of the Year season by forcing a fumble on wide receiver A.J. Brown and making a pivotal tackle on DeVonta Smith on fourth down in the third quarter. This game was a testament to Gilmore’s enduring capabilities and proved he still has significant value to offer.

Given Gilmore’s proven track record and recent performances, the Cowboys should strongly consider bringing him back. His presence could provide much-needed stability and experience to their defensive unit, potentially making a substantial impact in the upcoming season.
