The Oklahoma City Thunder signed Isaiah Hartenstein to a three-year, $87 million deal on Saturday, making the 26-year-old center available to the media, where he discussed his decision. Leaving the New York Knicks, a team in contention, for Oklahoma City, was challenging despite the salary boost. Hartenstein explained his reasons for joining the young Thunder squad.
Hartenstein expressed his fondness for New York, appreciating his teammates, Coach Thibodeau, executive Leon Rose, and the supportive fans. The key factor in his decision, however, was the Thunder’s established culture. He admired the team’s environment from afar and believed their playing style suited his high-IQ approach, especially given their emphasis on cutting and passing. He considers himself one of the NBA’s best passers and sees a good fit with the Thunder’s style.
Hartenstein was also impressed by Oklahoma City’s family-oriented atmosphere and felt he could expand his game there. Conversations with Coach Mark Daigneault, whom he found very open-minded, further solidified his decision. Hartenstein is enthusiastic about the partnership, believing it will not only energize him but also the Thunder and the NBA community. He is excited to contribute defensively, hoping his and Alex Caruso’s additions will help the Thunder improve even more after a solid last season.
