Jorge Mateo Avoids Arbitration, Signs One-Year Deal with Orioles

The Baltimore Orioles have secured second baseman Jorge Mateo for another season after reaching a one-year, $3.55 million contract agreement on Tuesday, avoiding an arbitration hearing. The deal provides stability for both the team and Mateo as they prepare for the 2025 MLB season.

Mateo’s contract also includes a club option for the 2026 season worth $5.5 million. Additionally, he has the opportunity to earn up to $500,000 in incentives based on his plate appearances in 2025. The breakdown of these bonuses includes $125,000 each if he reaches 460, 480, 500, and 520 plate appearances.

The negotiation process between Mateo and the Orioles had initially seen a gap in financial expectations. Mateo had filed for a $4 million salary, while the Orioles countered with an offer of $3.1 million. The two sides ultimately found common ground at $3.55 million, avoiding the need for an arbitration hearing.

During the 2024 season, Mateo posted a .229 batting average with five home runs, 18 RBIs, and 13 stolen bases. While his offensive numbers were modest, his defensive versatility and speed on the basepaths remain valuable assets to Baltimore’s roster.

By securing Mateo’s services for at least one more season, the Orioles maintain depth in their infield as they look to remain competitive. If he meets performance expectations, the 28-year-old infielder could earn an extended stay with the team through the 2026 season.
