Yankees polarizing outfielder ‘staring at’ one-year deal with….

Yankees outfielder Alex Verdugo, a polarizing figure in MLB, remains unsigned as free agency continues. At just 28 years old, Verdugo seemed poised for a lucrative multi-year deal before the 2024 season. However, while his defensive skills were exceptional, his offensive performance suffered a significant decline, leaving him searching for his next opportunity.

According to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, Verdugo is now likely looking at a one-year contract. “Outfielders haven’t panicked yet because the combination of need and contending teams should get them paid,” Passan said. He also noted that players like Jesse Winker and Randal Grichuk are expected to secure solid platoon roles, while Verdugo, Austin Hays, and Harrison Bader may settle for one-year deals. These shorter contracts could serve as opportunities to rebound with strong performances and aim for better deals in the following offseason.

Despite his recent struggles at the plate, Verdugo still offers significant potential. A one-year “prove-it” deal could allow him to regain his form and demonstrate his value. His time with the Yankees was underwhelming offensively, but his prior stint with the Boston Red Sox showcased better production. However, Verdugo’s tenure in Boston wasn’t without challenges, including reported clashes with manager Alex Cora.

As the offseason progresses, Verdugo hopes to find a team where he can capitalize on his defensive prowess and rediscover his offensive groove. With the right opportunity, he could make a strong case for a more substantial deal next year.
