The New York Yankees have a significant gap to address at second base following Gleyber Torres’ departure in free agency. Torres signed with the Detroit Tigers, leaving the Yankees to evaluate both internal and external solutions. While DJ LeMahieu is a potential in-house option, the team appears more inclined to explore outside alternatives.
According to Bob Nightengale of USA Today, the Yankees have expressed interest in Brendan Rodgers, who was recently non-tendered by the Colorado Rockies. Nightengale noted that the Yankees are “actively trying to deal starter Marcus Stroman and clear his $18 million salary” while also holding discussions with free-agent left-handed reliever Andrew Chafin and infielder Brendan Rodgers.
Rodgers, though not a power hitter, offers solid defense and consistency at the plate. He owns a career .267/.316/.409 slash line with 45 home runs, including a .267 average and 13 home runs last season. After an injury-shortened 2023 where he played just 46 games, Rodgers rebounded effectively, showing his value as a second baseman. He also earned a Gold Glove Award at the position in 2022.
While LeMahieu is under contract for $30 million over the next two seasons, injuries and a decline in performance make him a less reliable option. Spotrac projects Rodgers to command a five-year, $56 million deal in free agency, which could fit the Yankees’ aggressive offseason strategy.
Having already added Paul Goldschmidt, Max Fried, Cody Bellinger, and Devin Williams, the Yankees are determined to strengthen their roster after losing Juan Soto to the Mets. Signing Rodgers would reflect their commitment to upgrading key positions and positioning themselves for a strong run at the World Series.
