The Abu Dhabi Grand Prix has become a hotbed of drama, with Max Verstappen and George Russell at the center of attention amid their ongoing feud, which has escalated since the Qatar Grand Prix. Adding to the tension, Jolyon Palmer has entered the conversation, involving McLaren’s Lando Norris in the mix.
The season finale at the Yas Marina Circuit was already poised for significant developments, with drivers like Lewis Hamilton, Carlos Sainz, Nico Hulkenberg, Kevin Magnussen, Zhou Guanyu, and Valtteri Bottas preparing for their final appearances with their current teams. Additionally, Sergio Perez’s future with Red Bull hangs in the balance as the team plans to evaluate his position post-race.
The Verstappen-Russell conflict began during the Qatar GP’s Q3 session when Russell criticized Verstappen for what he described as dangerous behavior. Verstappen, knowing Russell was close behind, intentionally slowed down. This move earned Verstappen a one-place grid penalty from race stewards, promoting Russell to pole position. The penalty fueled tensions, with Verstappen resenting what he perceived as Russell’s efforts to get him punished. Verstappen responded by getting Norris investigated for disregarding double yellow flags during the race.
The feud took another turn in Abu Dhabi, where Russell alleged that Verstappen threatened to crash him into the wall during the Qatar GP. Both drivers have admitted to losing respect for one another, further souring their relationship. Palmer believes that Russell might now push back against Verstappen on track, contrasting him with Norris. According to Palmer, Norris has been unable to resist Verstappen’s dominance, leaving McLaren vulnerable against Red Bull this season. Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra, Palmer remarked that Verstappen has effectively “bullied” Norris and McLaren, gaining a psychological upper hand over the British driver.
This rivalry between Verstappen and Russell is set to add even more intensity to the season’s conclusion.
