A Collingwood member has been banned from attending AFL/AFLW matches for the remainder of 2024 after leaning over the fence and grabbing West Coast Eagles player Harvey Johnston during a match at Marvel Stadium. The incident, which occurred in the fourth quarter, involved the patron standing up, reaching over the fence, patting Johnston’s head, and taking the football from him.
Following a review of the security report and considering the fan’s immediate remorse, including providing his details to the police and security, the AFL imposed a 12-month ban, with six months suspended for two years. The club has also suspended the patron’s membership for the rest of the year, with the possibility of reinstating it for the 2025 season contingent upon cooperation with the sanction.
AFL General Counsel Stephen Meade emphasized that such behavior is unacceptable, despite the seemingly harmless nature of the incident. He commended Johnston for his professional response and acknowledged the fan’s prompt acknowledgment of wrongdoing and apology to Collingwood, West Coast, and the AFL.
Meade stressed the importance of respecting boundaries at sporting events, noting that while interactions between players and fans are valued, actions like those witnessed on Sunday undermine the enjoyment of the game for everyone. He reiterated the league’s commitment to fostering a positive fan experience while upholding clear standards of conduct.
