The Baltimore Orioles find themselves in an unusual situation. Despite boasting a young and dynamic offense filled with talent, they have yet to win a postseason game. With even more young prospects on the way, the team faces significant decisions this offseason. ESPN’s David Schoenfield predicts substantial roster movement as Baltimore prepares for the future.
The Orioles are already well-known for their rising stars, including Gunnar Henderson, Adley Rutschman, and Jackson Holliday. However, next season promises the arrival of even more impact players like Samuel Basallo, Coby Mayo, and Heston Kjerstad. To accommodate these emerging talents, the Orioles may have to make tough calls about their current roster.
Schoenfield suggests that Baltimore could trade either Ryan Mountcastle or Ryan O’Hearn to create financial flexibility and open up space for their younger players. O’Hearn’s trade value is high after two standout seasons, while Mountcastle, a solid power hitter, remains under contract until 2027. Both players could fetch valuable returns in trades, and this would allow the Orioles to give Mayo and Kjerstad everyday roles in the lineup.
Schoenfield also believes that the team won’t spend big to retain key players like Corbin Burnes or Anthony Santander and will likely decline José Jiménez’s option. While Baltimore might extend qualifying offers to Burnes and Santander, they may not commit to long-term deals. Burnes, after posting a 2.92 ERA over 194.1 innings, is expected to command a significant contract, as is Santander, who surprised many with 44 home runs this season. Ultimately, the Orioles might prefer to avoid major financial commitments and continue developing their young core.
