Trending News: Sue Bird Makes Her Feelings Clear That Caitlin Clark Is The WNBA Rookie Of The Year

In a recent panel discussion, basketball legend Sue Bird weighed in on the hotly debated WNBA Rookie of the Year race between Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese. While acknowledging the impressive rookie seasons both players have had, Bird expressed her preference for Clark, stating that she bases her decision on the “eye test” rather than a strict statistical comparison. She emphasized that Clark’s performance has stood out to her, making her the standout rookie in Bird’s eyes. However, Bird also made it clear that her opinion does not diminish Reese’s achievements, as both players are having exceptional seasons.

At the beginning of the season, Clark was widely considered the favorite for the Rookie of the Year award. However, Reese’s historic streak of double-doubles shifted the odds in her favor, making her a strong contender. This sentiment was echoed by Dawn Staley, WNBA legend and South Carolina women’s coach, who once leaned towards Reese for the award. Staley, while joking about avoiding controversy, praised both players but ultimately favored Reese for her consistent double-doubles. She also noted that the final decision might depend on which team makes the playoffs.

As the season progressed, Reese’s streak ended, and Clark’s performance surged, particularly as she led the Indiana Fever into a playoff position. This shift has once again made Clark the favorite for the award according to oddsmakers. Despite the competition, Bird emphasized that both Clark and Reese are having historically great rookie campaigns, deserving recognition for their contributions to the league.
