On Monday, the United Football League terminated the contracts of six players, marking the first day UFL players could join NFL teams after their spring season. Two of these players were reportedly on the radar of the Green Bay Packers.
One of these players is Jake Bates, a kicker who had an impressive season with the Michigan Panthers. Bates visited Green Bay but ultimately signed with the Detroit Lions, despite interest from five other NFL teams.
The second player of interest for the Packers was offensive lineman Liam Fornadel from the DC Defenders. Fornadel, recognized for his exceptional guard play and named an All-XFL player in 2023, also visited Green Bay. However, he decided to sign with the New England Patriots.
The Packers are currently lacking depth at the guard position, with more players allocated to tackle roles. Elgton Jenkins and Zach Tom, both versatile players, are expected to fill key positions on the line. Jenkins can play across the line, while Tom is projected to start as the right tackle. Competing for the right guard position are Sean Rhyan and 2024 first-round pick Jordan Morgan, who is also training at both tackle spots.
Beyond these main contenders, Green Bay’s guard depth is limited. Royce Newman, the only experienced backup, might be released due to salary cap considerations. Other backup options include Lecitus Smith, signed after a rookie minicamp tryout, and undrafted rookie Donovan Jennings, transitioning from tackle to guard.
Despite missing out on Bates and Fornadel, the Packers might still explore other UFL players, as they have an open roster spot and can sign a new player without needing to make additional roster adjustments.
