Raul Fernandez has dismissed the idea of returning to Moto2 in 2025 if he doesn’t secure a MotoGP ride next year. Despite being the runner-up in Moto2 in 2021, Fernandez has struggled to replicate that success in MotoGP since his debut in 2022. Over his first two seasons in the premier class, he managed only one top-five finish. However, recent races in 2024 have shown an improvement in his performance.
At the Catalan GP, Fernandez led the sprint race before crashing and then secured a sixth-place finish in the grand prix on his Trackhouse Racing Aprilia after qualifying on the front row in Barcelona. The MotoGP rider market has been highly active, especially after Ducati’s decision to promote Marc Marquez to its factory team for 2025, leading to rapid seat fillings.
Within the Aprilia team, three bikes are available following Maverick Vinales’ move to KTM, providing Fernandez with opportunities to stay with Trackhouse Racing in 2025. Speaking in Barcelona last month, Fernandez expressed his desire to remain in MotoGP, stating, “I know what I want to do, I know I want to stay.” He added that it’s not the right time to discuss details and that things are progressing positively.
When questioned about a possible return to Moto2, Fernandez firmly declined, emphasizing that there are other priorities before considering such a move. He noted that the era when riders could establish successful careers in other grand prix classes outside of MotoGP has passed. Since Moto2 replaced the 250cc class in 2010, very few riders have successfully returned to MotoGP after stepping back to the intermediate division. Fernandez’s stance highlights his commitment to remaining in the top tier of motorcycle racing.
