DONE DEAL: Baltimore Orioles fans can finally rejoice after

Baltimore Orioles’ Base-Stealing Performance in Boston Signals Record-Breaking Season Ahead.

Baltimore Orioles showcased a promising start to the season with an impressive base-stealing display during their opening series against Boston. The team, benefiting from MLB’s new rules such as larger bases and limited pickoff attempts, aims to break base-stealing records. Orioles fans are optimistic, especially with top base-stealers Jorge Mateo and Cedric Mullins leading the charge. Mateo humorously predicted he could steal 50 bases this year.

The Orioles’ aggressive approach was evident as Mateo and Mullins combined for four steals on Opening Day, causing such disruption that Boston’s catcher was replaced. The team ended the series with 10 stolen bases, with Mateo already 8% towards his 50-steal goal. This aggressive strategy marks a significant shift from the Buck Showalter era when the Orioles were known for their power hitting and minimal base-stealing.

Under Brandon Hyde’s management, the Orioles are fully embracing the new rules, signaling their intent to opponents. Mateo and Mullins, who combined for 69 steals in 2022, are expected to exceed that number this season. Mateo might even challenge the franchise record for steals. While Mateo’s high on-base percentage from the Boston series may not be sustainable, maintaining a .315-.325 OBP could see him surpass 60 steals.

The Orioles’ base-stealing potential extends beyond Mateo and Mullins. Catcher Adley Rutschman and first baseman Ryan Mountcastle, both with above-average speed for their positions, could also contribute significantly. Rutschman, with a sprint speed ranking him seventh among catchers, might achieve double-digit steals. Mountcastle, equally fast, could similarly increase his stolen base count.
