Sydney Roosters star Angus Crichton has stated there is “no update” on his contract status for the next season following his club’s unsuccessful attempt to sign David Fifita. The New South Wales back-rower acknowledged that the club’s pursuit of Fifita was not a personal slight against him. Crichton, 28, who is out of contract at the end of the season, remains the top edge forward available on the market. Although discussions with Roosters’ head Nick Politis have intensified recently, Crichton has not yet signed an extension.
“My manager has spoken with Nick, and they’re trying to figure something out,” Crichton said. “I’m not going to rush it. I just need to focus on playing good footy and let the rest take care of itself.”
Crichton expressed his dissatisfaction with the Roosters’ move to sign Fifita from the Titans, a deal that ultimately fell through. He felt sidelined by the process and was displeased that no one had communicated with him about the developments. However, he has since cooled down and insists he has no ongoing issues with the club or coach Trent Robinson.
“I was emotional, and there was a bit of a build-up, so I spoke from the heart,” Crichton admitted. “There’s no love lost for the club. The club has given me so much. I understand at the end of the day that it’s a business and it’s not personal.”
Crichton also mentioned that he and Robinson had a private conversation following his initial reaction. “We sat down and had a chat after that. I’ll keep that confidential, but we talked after that interview, and we’ve got a good relationship and we’re in a good place now,” he added.
