Saints legend Nick Dal Santo has responded to the idea that the Western Bulldogs failed to fulfill their promises to Rory Lobb, who is seeking a trade to a fourth club at the season’s end. Lobb, who still has two years left on his contract, is reportedly frustrated because he was told he would play a key role in the Bulldogs’ forward line when he joined the club at the end of 2022. The 31-year-old former Docker and Giant has scored 25 goals in 23 games for the Bulldogs, but his performance this season has been limited.
Dal Santo argues that both Lobb and the club must uphold a certain standard, dismissing the notion that Lobb was guaranteed a forward line position. He believes that players must earn their spots through performance and not rely on promises. Dal Santo has no issue with Bulldogs coach Luke Beveridge’s approach and understands Lobb’s desire to play senior football, even if it means moving to a fourth club.
Lobb might get another chance in the senior team as Aaron Naughton faces a six-week injury, but this opportunity does not change Lobb’s intent to seek a trade. Dal Santo notes that while such trade scenarios are uncommon in the AFL, they are becoming more accepted, similar to practices in other sports.
He points out that Melbourne, North Melbourne, St Kilda, and Collingwood are looking for a key forward/ruck player, with the Magpies and Kangaroos being the most logical destinations for Lobb. Ultimately, Dal Santo believes that Lobb needs to prove his worth, no matter where he ends up playing in 2025.
