When the puck drops on Wednesday at Madison Square Garden to kick off the Eastern Conference Final between the New York Rangers and Florida Panthers, numerous intriguing matchups will unfold. Mika Zibanejad has long been recognized as one of the premier two-way forwards in the NHL, though his highest finish for the Frank J. Selke Trophy, awarded to the league’s best defensive forward, was 15th during the 2021-22 season. In contrast, Aleksander Barkov has just secured his second Selke Trophy, previously winning in the 2020-21 season. Barkov has consistently been a top defensive center since his debut in the 2013-14 season.

Upon receiving the award, Barkov emphasized the importance of team effort and defensive systems, noting, “We have great systems, defensive-minded systems. We always think about the defensive side first… Offense is usually the best defense.” This team-first mentality has bolstered Barkov’s individual performance.

Examining their statistics over the past three seasons reveals minimal differences between the two players. Barkov averages just .18 more points per game than Zibanejad and holds a slight edge in on-ice even strength goals (61.9% to 59.5%). Zibanejad, however, excels in special teams play, scoring more points per 60 minutes both shorthanded and on the power play.

Rangers coach Peter Laviolette praised Zibanejad’s performance, noting his speed and creativity on the ice. Zibanejad has been a key contributor in the playoffs, tallying 14 points (three goals, 11 assists) in 10 games. Teammate Vincent Trocheck highlighted Zibanejad’s competitive nature and leadership by example, acknowledging his increased intensity during the postseason.

This individual matchup between Zibanejad and Barkov could be the deciding factor in the series, potentially shaping the path to the Stanley Cup Final.
