Ex-Vikings QB Sam Darnold Gets Bad News Ahead of 1st Year With Seahawks…..

Former Minnesota Vikings quarterback Sam Darnold has hit an early roadblock as he embarks on his first season with the Seattle Seahawks. Despite signing a significant three-year contract worth $100.5 million—with $52.5 million guaranteed—the structure of the deal suggests the Seahawks are keeping their long-term options open. The team has included a $37.5 million “escape clause” that would allow them to move on from Darnold after just one year with minimal financial consequences. This contractual flexibility casts a shadow of uncertainty over Darnold’s status as Seattle’s definitive starting quarterback.

Adding to this challenge is the Seahawks’ decision to draft Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe in the third round of the 2025 NFL Draft. Milroe is considered a highly athletic and promising prospect, and though he may not be expected to start immediately, his presence adds pressure to Darnold’s situation. If Darnold falters early in the season, the Seahawks may choose to give the rookie a chance, especially with fan and media interest building around the young talent.

Darnold earned this opportunity in Seattle following a strong showing in Minnesota, where he led the Vikings to a 14-3 record last season. However, it’s clear that the Seahawks are not ready to fully commit to him as the future of the franchise. This upcoming season may very well serve as a proving ground for Darnold, as he will need to perform at a high level to solidify his position and silence the growing speculation about Milroe eventually taking over the reins.
