Vikings TE TJ Hockenson says JJ McCarthy’s throws remind him of Matt Stafford’s: “I remember catching passes from Staff (Matt Stafford)… it zips on you, looks like it’s not coming, but it’s coming. JJ has the juice behind it where it kind of has that effect…..

Minnesota Vikings tight end T.J. Hockenson recently shared high praise for rookie quarterback J.J. McCarthy, drawing a compelling comparison to one of the NFL’s most respected passers—Matthew Stafford. Speaking about his early experiences with McCarthy during offseason workouts and team activities, Hockenson highlighted the young QB’s arm strength and deceptive velocity, which immediately reminded him of catching passes from Stafford during their shared time with the Detroit Lions.

Hockenson elaborated that McCarthy’s throws have a unique quality to them—just like Stafford’s. According to him, the ball appears to float or come in casually at first, but then surprises you with a sharp, tight spiral that reaches the target quicker than expected. “It zips on you,” Hockenson remarked, describing how the throw can catch a receiver off guard if they aren’t fully ready. He added that McCarthy has “the juice,” referring to both the raw power and finesse that McCarthy applies to his throws, giving them a professional polish uncommon in most rookies.

This comparison is notable not only because of Stafford’s elite reputation as a passer but also because it indicates Hockenson’s growing confidence in McCarthy’s potential to lead the Vikings offense. As a Pro Bowl-caliber tight end, Hockenson’s endorsement carries weight, and his early chemistry with McCarthy bodes well for Minnesota’s hopes heading into the 2025 season.

With Kevin O’Connell’s quarterback-friendly system and a solid group of weapons including Hockenson, Justin Jefferson, and Jordan Addison, McCarthy may be positioned for a smoother transition than most rookie signal-callers.
