South Carolina women’s basketball has just made a major move by securing the commitment of standout recruit Ayla McDowell. A dynamic 6-foot-2 wing from Cypress Springs High School in Texas, McDowell brings both talent and promise to the Gamecocks’ already impressive roster. Her announcement comes as part of the 2025 recruiting class, and it’s one that has caught national attention.
Ranked No. 22 on ESPNW’s Top 100 list for the class of 2025, McDowell is widely regarded for her versatility on the court. Her game blends scoring, rebounding, and defensive skill, making her one of the most complete high school players in the country. During her junior season, she averaged nearly 20 points, 9 rebounds, over 2 steals, and more than 2 assists per game—a true testament to her all-around ability. These numbers, combined with her high IQ and leadership on the court, led her to be named a McDonald’s All-American.
Her impact extends internationally as well. McDowell represented Brazil at the 2024 FIBA U18 Women’s AmeriCup, leading her team in scoring with nearly 15 points per game. That international experience only adds to the excitement around her arrival at South Carolina.
Gamecocks head coach Dawn Staley praised McDowell as a player who can make an immediate difference. She called Ayla “a Swiss Army knife,” capable of scoring at every level and defending all positions. Staley also sees leadership potential in McDowell, believing she could become a future captain of the team.
McDowell’s decision to join South Carolina solidifies the program’s elite status in women’s college basketball and sets the stage for another powerhouse chapter in the team’s future.
