MEGA Deal: Yankees has Officially Added Veteran Infielder Whit Merrifield of $97.4 Million for a Duration and Replacement of…..

The New York Yankees are reportedly considering veteran infielder Whit Merrifield to address their need at second base. This need became pressing after Gleyber Torres signed with the Detroit Tigers during the offseason. The Yankees now face two potential strategies: shifting Jazz Chisholm Jr. from third base to second and signing a new third baseman or keeping Chisholm at third and adding a second baseman.

Whit Merrifield has emerged as a potential solution, according to Brendan Kuty of The Athletic. Kuty reported that the Yankees engaged with Merrifield after he was released by the Philadelphia Phillies in July. Merrifield later joined the Atlanta Braves, where he posted a 93 OPS+ in 42 games. The three-time All-Star and three-time AL stolen base leader will turn 36 later this month.

In 2024, Merrifield split time between the Phillies and Braves, batting .222 with 4 home runs and 15 RBIs. Over his career, which spans 1,147 games, Merrifield has maintained a .280 batting average, hitting 94 home runs and driving in 485 RBIs. His proven versatility and extensive experience make him an attractive option for the Yankees, who are exploring multiple avenues to solidify their infield.

The Yankees have been linked to various infielders during free agency, but Merrifield’s availability and skill set appear to align with the team’s immediate needs. If signed, he could provide stability and veteran leadership as New York looks to fill the void left by Torres.
