South Carolina’s No. 7 ranking in On3’s way-too-early 2025 top 10 can be attributed to its emerging young talent. Defensive standout Dylan Stewart made an immediate impact, while quarterback LaNorris Sellers rose to stardom. Additionally, left tackle Josiah Thompson earned Freshman All-American recognition. The Gamecocks have solidified their foundation by securing their third consecutive top-20 high school recruiting class and excelling in the transfer portal in two of the last three cycles.

Meeting the high expectations of a top-10 ranking will be a challenge. With rising sophomores excelling in critical positions, South Carolina is well-positioned for success. The team’s performance will hinge on new offensive coordinator Mike Shula’s ability to deliver and the defense maintaining its high level of play. If head coach Shane Beamer and his staff can once again capitalize on the transfer portal, the optimism surrounding the team could prove justified.

In 2024, South Carolina exceeded preseason expectations, finishing with a 9-4 record despite predictions of only 5 or 6 wins. They capped the season by earning a spot in the top non-College Football Playoff bowl game, though they suffered a narrow loss to Illinois.
