The MLB offseason, which began with a flurry of activity in early December, has recently slowed down. Big names like Juan Soto, Max Fried, and Garrett Crochet have already found new homes through trades or signings, but there are still plenty of intriguing free agents and trade opportunities available. With Christmas now behind us, many expect the MLB hot stove to reignite soon, especially as rumors continue circulating despite the recent lull.
One of the most talked-about names remaining is Japanese right-hander Roki Sasaki, who could be the most compelling free agent left now that Soto is off the market. While Sasaki doesn’t boast an MLB track record like Corbin Burnes, his limited contract restrictions make him an appealing option for all 30 MLB teams. However, not every team has had the chance to engage with Sasaki, as a few clubs have noted they haven’t been invited to discussions with him yet. Despite this, Sasaki has already spoken with several teams, including the Texas Rangers.
Chris Young, the Rangers’ president of baseball operations, confirmed the team recently met with Sasaki, though he didn’t disclose any specifics about the discussion. Securing a meeting itself is significant given the widespread interest in Sasaki. While Texas isn’t a West Coast team, doesn’t have a stellar record for developing pitchers, and is coming off a disappointing season, Sasaki’s willingness to entertain the Rangers indicates some level of mutual interest.
Although Texas landing Sasaki remains uncertain, their meeting suggests they have a chance, even if the odds currently appear slim.
