The Boston Red Sox appear poised for a strong 2025 season, thanks to a promising young core and significant offseason additions. The team has already bolstered its roster by acquiring Garrett Crochet, Walker Buehler, and Aroldis Chapman, and it’s clear the front office isn’t finished improving.
While the Red Sox have made strides, they still need to address two key areas: additional bullpen depth and a powerful right-handed bat to strengthen the lineup. Two specific moves could help Boston complete a stellar offseason.
Re-sign Chris Martin
The veteran reliever has been a cornerstone of Boston’s bullpen over the past two seasons. Martin posted an impressive 1.05 ERA in 2023 and followed it with a solid 3.45 ERA in 2024. With his experience and effectiveness, bringing him back would be a logical and cost-effective decision. A bullpen featuring Martin alongside Chapman, Justin Slaten, Liam Hendriks, and Garrett Whitlock has the potential to dominate.
Pursue Alex Bregman
Adding Bregman would address Boston’s need for a reliable right-handed bat while bringing a respected veteran presence to the clubhouse. Initially, he could slot in at second base, giving prospects like Vaughn Grissom or Kristian Campbell more time to develop. There’s been speculation about shifting Rafael Devers from third base, but that would likely require moving Triston Casas or Masataka Yoshida, neither of which seems imminent. Bregman could transition to third base in 2026, solidifying Boston’s infield for years.
With these moves, Boston could not only solidify its playoff aspirations but potentially surpass the New York Yankees in competitiveness.
