The New York Yankees continue to pursue a potential trade for eight-time All-Star third baseman Nolan Arenado from the St. Louis Cardinals. Despite Arenado’s $25.5 million annual luxury tax salary over the next three years, the Yankees are exploring ways to navigate their financial constraints and bring the star to their roster. Adding Arenado would significantly enhance their infield and provide a powerful bat in the lineup.
To make the deal work financially, the Yankees are expected to include right-hander Marcus Stroman in the trade package. Stroman, who has an $18.5 million salary for the 2025 season, is in the final year of his contract. However, if he pitches over 140 innings in 2025, a player option for 2026 would automatically trigger, complicating his financial value. By sending Stroman to the Cardinals, the Yankees could help balance the payroll impact of acquiring Arenado.
Alternatively, the Cardinals may need to cover a portion of Arenado’s salary to make the trade feasible for New York. Reports have suggested that the Cardinals were willing to absorb between $15-20 million in a prior trade discussion that would have sent Arenado to the Houston Astros, a deal he ultimately vetoed.
If completed, the trade would give the Yankees a marquee player in Arenado while providing the Cardinals with financial flexibility and pitching depth in Stroman. The Yankees remain determined to find a way to bring Arenado to the Bronx and solidify their lineup for the upcoming season.
