The New York Yankees have been active this offseason, but their roster could face significant changes. After already losing one All-Star in free agency, they might see another key player depart in the coming weeks.
According to Zach Pressnell of Newsweek, Gleyber Torres is projected to leave the Yankees and join the Los Angeles Angels in free agency. Pressnell predicts that Torres will sign a two-year, $25 million contract with Los Angeles, a team eager to bolster its roster. “The Angels are focused on winning as quickly as possible,” Pressnell stated, emphasizing that Torres, a low-risk, high-reward option at this stage in his career, would be a significant addition for a team hungry for success.
Torres is coming off a lackluster 2024 season, during which he hit .257 with 15 home runs. Despite his underwhelming performance, he maintained an OPS+ above 100 and has accumulated 138 career home runs. Given his past success, including consecutive All-Star appearances early in his career, Torres could be a cost-effective option for Los Angeles. Meanwhile, the Yankees appear less inclined to retain him, especially with their plans to explore the third base market. Such moves could shift Jazz Chisholm Jr. to second base, reducing the need for Torres.
Pressnell also pointed out that the Angels should act quickly to secure Torres while the opportunity exists. In a worst-case scenario, Los Angeles could trade him at the deadline if needed.
Although the Yankees have the financial flexibility to retain Torres, their priority seems to be upgrading multiple areas to compensate for Juan Soto’s departure. For now, Torres may find a fresh start and new opportunities with the Angels.
