As the offseason progresses into winter, the New York Yankees still have gaps to fill in their lineup despite recent moves to bolster the roster. One notable acquisition is former MVP Cody Bellinger, who provides flexibility to play center field or first base. However, the Yankees still need to address their infield, particularly at second or third base, with Jazz Chisholm likely shifting to the position left unaddressed.
Gleyber Torres, a former Yankee and two-time All-Star, is among the available free agents this offseason. At 28 years old, Torres is experiencing free agency for the first time in his career. While a reunion with the Yankees isn’t entirely off the table, Chris Kirschner of The Athletic predicts the team is ready to move on.
“I don’t think Torres will be back with the Yankees,” Kirschner noted in a recent mailbag. He explained that despite the Yankees’ clear need at second base, their lack of interest in re-signing Torres suggests they are prioritizing a different direction. However, Kirschner added that a reunion might still occur if Torres’ market doesn’t develop as expected and the Yankees remain in need of infield depth, though he expressed doubt about such a scenario.
Torres played a pivotal role during the Yankees’ 2024 World Series run, particularly as a reliable leadoff hitter in the latter part of the season. However, his defensive struggles and occasional lapses as a base runner may have overshadowed his offensive contributions. As the Yankees prepare for 2025, their roster is likely to undergo significant changes, with Torres seemingly not part of their future plans.
