The New York Yankees might be moving on from Juan Soto, but they still haven’t replaced his most critical contribution to their lineup. While Soto’s 41 home runs were valuable, including the clutch extra-innings blast that secured the Yankees’ World Series berth, his true strength was his exceptional plate discipline. Soto drew 129 walks last season, a crucial factor when batting ahead of home run leader Aaron Judge. This combination gave the Yankees a significant offensive edge.
Judge, who led MLB with 133 walks, could find himself walking even more this season if he faces bases-empty situations. To maximize Judge’s impact, the Yankees need to address this void by targeting players who can consistently get on base. Additionally, New York must address another gap at first base, and one intriguing option could be San Francisco Giants first baseman LaMonte Wade Jr.
Dylan Backer of Empire Sports Media recently identified Wade as an ideal trade candidate for the Yankees. Citing a report by ESPN’s Jeff Passan, Backer noted that Wade is reportedly available in trades. Despite a modest 2024 campaign where Wade hit just eight home runs with a .260 batting average, his 119 wRC+ demonstrates his ability to add value. Wade’s on-base skills make him particularly appealing, as his 138 walks over the past two seasons led to a .373 OBP. Positioned at the top of the Yankees’ lineup, Wade could be an effective leadoff hitter while addressing their need for players who consistently reach base.
While Wade wouldn’t entirely replace what Soto brought to the Yankees, his skill set aligns well with their immediate needs. His ability to draw walks and set the table for Judge could help offset the loss of Soto. Wade is projected to earn a five-year, $36 million contract extension according to Spotrac, though the Yankees would likely hold off on such a commitment until he proves his value. Even then, his contract would offer significant affordability for the on-base production he brings to the table.
