The New York Yankees’ acquisition of Cody Bellinger strongly indicates that Alex Verdugo will be moving on to a new team in 2025. While the market for Verdugo has been relatively quiet, speculation suggests the Miami Marlins as a potential landing spot. However, another National League team that could provide him the opportunity he seeks is the Pittsburgh Pirates.
The Pirates, a team on the rise, are under pressure to build a competitive roster around their young star Paul Skenes. Alex Verdugo would be an ideal fit in left field, allowing Bryan Reynolds to shift to right field. This alignment would enhance the team’s defensive setup, particularly around center fielder Oneil Cruz. Verdugo, with an estimated annual value of $15 million, is a reasonable investment, especially after the Pirates saved on payroll by trading for Spencer Horwitz to fill their first base needs. This move has given General Manager Ben Cherington greater flexibility to allocate resources elsewhere.
Although Verdugo had a down year in 2024, batting .233 with 13 home runs and 61 RBIs, PNC Park’s pitcher-friendly reputation hasn’t hindered left-handed hitters in the past, as demonstrated by players like Pedro Alvarez, Gregory Polanco, and Oneil Cruz. If Verdugo’s market value drops below the $15 million mark due to his recent performance, it would further incentivize the Pirates to pursue him.
Adding Verdugo to the outfield would bolster the Pirates’ roster, providing the defensive and offensive boost needed as they aim to compete in the NL.
