On paper, Alex Bregman seems like a logical addition to the New York Yankees as they address their third base needs. However, MLB Network analyst Harold Reynolds believes signing the free-agent third baseman comes with significant challenges.
“There’s bad blood that can’t be overlooked,” Reynolds said, referring to the lingering resentment Yankees fans harbor toward the Houston Astros over the 2017 sign-stealing scandal. Players like Jose Altuve and Carlos Correa have been frequent targets of hostility from Yankees fans, and Bregman could face a similar reception in the Bronx. Reynolds warns that a slow start for Bregman could exacerbate tensions, making it difficult for him to win over the crowd.
The scandal remains a sore spot for the Yankees organization. General Manager Brian Cashman has openly criticized the Astros, recently suggesting that the cheating scandal may have cost the Yankees a World Series appearance during their now 15-year title drought.
Despite these concerns, Cashman has confirmed the Yankees’ interest in Bregman, revealing ongoing discussions with his agent, Scott Boras. Former Yankee and Astro Cameron Maybin sees potential chemistry between Bregman and Yankees captain Aaron Judge, while MLB analyst Matt Vasgersian agrees that Bregman fills a clear need but is skeptical about how fans would embrace a former Astro.
Vasgersian notes, however, that a strong debut could quickly turn the tide. “If Bregman hits a homer on Opening Day, he’s a Yankee—period,” he said, highlighting the fickle nature of fan sentiment. Whether the Yankees ultimately take the risk remains to be seen.
