The New York Mets bolstered their infield depth on Monday by signing Jared Young to a one-year contract. The move comes as the team faces uncertainty at first base with star slugger Pete Alonso hitting free agency this offseason.
Young, a 29-year-old Canadian infielder, brings a mix of major league experience and recent success overseas. He has appeared in 22 MLB games over the past two seasons with the Chicago Cubs, compiling a .210 batting average, two home runs, eight RBIs, and a .725 OPS across 69 plate appearances.
After being claimed off waivers by the St. Louis Cardinals in November 2023, Young excelled at Triple-A Memphis, where he hit .285 with 11 home runs and a .917 OPS. Despite his strong performance, he was released in July. Seeking opportunities abroad, Young joined the Doosan Bears in Korea’s KBO League. There, he impressed with a .326 batting average, 10 home runs, 39 RBIs, and a stellar 1.080 OPS in 38 games, showcasing his offensive abilities.
Drafted by the Cubs in the 15th round of the 2017 MLB Draft out of Old Dominion University, Young has primarily played first base at the major league level, making all 12 of his starts at the position. However, he has displayed versatility throughout his minor league career, having played every position except catcher and center field.
With Alonso’s future in question, Young’s addition gives the Mets a cost-effective left-handed option at first base while adding versatility to their roster. His recent performances suggest he could compete for playing time as the team navigates its offseason roster decisions.
