The New York Mets may take an aggressive approach this offseason following their near miss at the 2024 World Series, with a particular focus on improving their starting rotation. FanSided’s Josue de Jesus has suggested a trade to acquire Chicago White Sox ace Garrett Crochet, a move that could significantly bolster the Mets’ pitching staff.
The proposed trade would send left-handed pitcher Garrett Crochet to the Mets in exchange for shortstop/outfielder Jett Williams, outfielder/first baseman Ryan Clifford, catcher Kevin Parada, and right-handed pitcher Blade Tidwell. Crochet, who is under team control through 2026 and projected to earn $2.9 million in 2025 via arbitration, became an All-Star in his first season as a starter. He posted a 3.58 ERA and struck out 209 batters in 146 innings in 2024. Spotrac projects Crochet could sign a six-year, $130 million contract when he reaches free agency.
De Jesus notes that any negotiations for Crochet would likely require the Mets to include their top position prospect, Jett Williams, currently ranked as the organization’s No. 2 prospect by MLB Pipeline. The White Sox are reportedly open to moving Crochet this winter, as revealed by USA Today’s Bob Nightengale, who described him as one of the most sought-after players at the recent GM meetings.
Acquiring Crochet would provide a substantial upgrade for the Mets, especially if they lose Sean Manaea in free agency. Unlike other free-agent options such as Corbin Burnes, Blake Snell, or Max Fried, Crochet’s contract would not hinder the Mets’ ability to pursue Juan Soto. Adding Crochet could strengthen the rotation while maintaining financial flexibility for other big moves.
