The Atlanta Hawks had a strong finish to the 2020-21 season, securing fifth place in the Eastern Conference after switching head coaches from Lloyd Pierce to Nate McMillan. However, in the three seasons since, they’ve fallen to ninth, eighth, and 10th place. As they head into the 2024-25 season, their success will heavily depend on the effectiveness of their recent changes.
According to Joseph Zucker of Bleacher Report, the Hawks might find themselves in what he describes as “NBA purgatory” by the end of the upcoming season. He suggests that the Hawks are more likely to play the role of spoilers rather than true contenders. Zucker predicts that Atlanta will struggle to surpass their previous season’s 36 wins, forecasting a 35-47 record.
The Toronto Raptors, who finished behind Atlanta last season, are viewed as the Hawks’ main competition for a Play-In Tournament spot. However, potential declines from teams like the Chicago Bulls—who traded key players Alex Caruso and DeMar DeRozan—could open up opportunities for the Hawks to move up. Despite their struggles, the Hawks were only three wins behind the Bulls last season, even with Trae Young playing just 54 games.
Zucker believes a 40-win season and a ninth-place finish is a realistic goal for the Hawks. Still, the top of the Eastern Conference remains strong, with the Philadelphia 76ers expected to improve after signing Paul George, making it challenging for the Hawks to climb the standings. Even with potential improvements, matching the Miami Heat’s 46 wins from last season could be tough for Atlanta.
