The Atlanta Hawks are looking to secure a long-term deal with sharpshooter Garrison Mathews this offseason. Following trades involving AJ Griffin and Dejounte Murray and allowing Saddiq Bey to enter unrestricted free agency, the Hawks are reshaping their roster by clearing contracts and retaining key players.
On June 29, HoopsHype reported that the Hawks will pick up Mathews’ $2.23 million option after he posted a career-high 44% from three-point range last season. Known as “Garry Bird” for his shooting ability, Mathews stood out despite some efficiency concerns, and the Hawks are considering an extension when he becomes eligible on July 6.
Currently, the team is about $10 million below the luxury tax threshold, allowing them to strategically plan for the future while balancing financial and on-court needs.
