Sad News: Ulster and the IRFU have confirmed that CEO Hugh McCaughey have to leave after…..

McCaughey has been a significant figure in Ulster rugby for the past forty years and stepped into the role of interim CEO in April, following Jonny Petrie’s departure from the position by mutual consent in March. This period has been challenging for the Belfast-based team, which also saw the departure of former head coach Dan McFarland earlier in the year.

Reflecting on his tenure, McCaughey stated, “I have relished the challenges and opportunities that have come from leading Ulster Rugby since I took up the role of CEO in April, and I look forward to continuing to move the province forward over the course of the next season.” He emphasized the need for the province to build on its current momentum, highlighting the promising young talent emerging into the professional squad, the strong growth of the Women and Girls’ game, and the increasing participation in domestic rugby across Ulster.

Acknowledging the financial and other challenges in the short term, McCaughey expressed confidence in a clear, strong, and positive direction for the future, supported by the IRFU. He is optimistic about building on the work started towards the end of the last season and is eagerly anticipating the upcoming season alongside supporters, players, coaches, and everyone involved with Ulster Rugby.

The province is also reportedly grappling with financial difficulties off the pitch, a matter that Paul Terrington, chair of Ulster Rugby’s management committee, addressed openly. Terrington affirmed their confidence in McCaughey’s leadership, citing his extensive organizational experience and deep understanding of the game. The extension of McCaughey’s contract is a testament to the progress made so far.

Terrington emphasized the importance of stabilizing the club’s financial situation in partnership with the IRFU and establishing a strategic way forward. He expressed confidence that McCaughey will continue to lay the necessary foundations in the coming months, which will benefit the province for years to come. The organization is optimistic about the potential achievements in both domestic and professional rugby in the new season.
