This summer, Philadelphia 76ers star Joel Embiid is one of the many NBA superstars participating in the 2024 Olympics. Despite playing alongside some of his biggest rivals, Embiid hasn’t refrained from taking friendly jabs at them. During the NBA season, Embiid and Jayson Tatum are on opposing teams, but they share a trainer and spend part of their offseason together.
On his new podcast, Drew Hanlen provided a glimpse into this dynamic. In the first episode of his “Check Ball” show, Hanlen had Embiid as a guest. During their conversation, Embiid discussed the banter between him and Tatum, specifically highlighting how his situation differs since he isn’t part of a superteam. Embiid remarked, “I tell him the same thing. If I go 5-for-20, we get blown out.”
This summer, Embiid and Tatum will spend significant time together as they both play for Team USA. The two rivals will set aside their differences temporarily to aim for a gold medal for the United States.
Tatum enjoyed a successful season, culminating in his first championship win as part of a star-studded roster. Meanwhile, Embiid finds himself in a similar position now. The 76ers’ President of Basketball Operations, Daryl Morey, had an active offseason, most notably signing Paul George to a four-year max contract. With this new All-Star teammate and an improved supporting cast, Embiid and the 76ers aim to challenge the Celtics’ dominance next season.
