Deal Done: JD Martinez has trade with Red Sox worth $300M, for a multi-year contract

A year ago, the Red Sox found themselves in a situation quite similar to where they are now, comfortably above .500 and competing for one of the three AL wild card spots. However, GM Chaim Bloom chose not to make any bold moves at the MLB trade deadline, resulting in a decline from a 56-47 record on July 27 to a disappointing 78-84 finish, placing them last in their division.

Currently, the Red Sox boast a 51-41 record and have won eight of their last ten games, positioning themselves as a potential playoff contender. According to FanGraphs, the Red Sox have a 47% chance of securing a playoff berth. This situation might prompt the new GM, Craig Breslow, to take a more aggressive approach in the trade market, even if it means making minor adjustments.

Unlike Bloom, Breslow has the advantage of having played in the MLB for 12 years with seven different teams, giving him firsthand knowledge of how strategic moves at the trade deadline can boost team morale. If the Red Sox continue to remain competitive in the wild card race and maintain their position as a potential contender for the AL East title, Breslow is likely to be proactive. One potential move could involve bringing back JD Martinez, a veteran leader familiar to the Red Sox, to strengthen the team for the final stretch. Such a move would not only enhance the roster but also uplift the team’s spirits as they push for a playoff spot.
