Year one of the Jordan Love era couldn’t have gone much better.
Love started all 19 games, threw 37 touchdown passes and only 13 interceptions, leading the Packers to the NFC Divisional playoffs. Between Week 11 and the divisional playoff game against San Francisco, Love threw an impressive 23 touchdowns and just one interception.
Love completed 409 of 634 passes (64.5%) for 4,625 yards, finishing with a 98.5 passer rating. For comparison, Aaron Rodgers threw 28 touchdowns and 13 interceptions in his first year as a starter in 2008, with a passer rating of 93.8.
“He had a hell of a year,” said Packers coach Matt LaFleur about Love.
Now, Love is set for a significant contract — possibly before the 2024 season starts.
Love, entering the final year of his contract, has been participating in the Packers’ organized team activities and spoke with reporters on Tuesday. Here are five key points from Love.
1. Participation is key
In May 2023, the Packers signed Love to a one-year, $13.5 million contract extension instead of exercising his fifth-year option. This deal allows Love to become a free agent at the end of the season, though it’s highly unlikely he will hit the open market.
Love is emerging as a star in the league, a genuine MVP contender, and the future for Green Bay.
Although OTAs are voluntary, Love could have skipped them while waiting for a new deal. However, he felt it was crucial to be present for this young Green Bay team.
