Tony Romo and Jim Nantz face challenges as Super Bowl 2024 approaches
Spike Eskin’s reaction highlights WFAN’s enduring influence
ESPN and NFL engage in advanced discussions on a potential agreement that could grant the league a stake in the television giant.
Prior to ultimately finalizing Tony Romo’s contract with a total worth of $180 million over a span of 10 years, CBS made an offer to Peyton Manning for Romo’s position, The Post has discovered.
Given CBS’s concerns about the escalating nature of Romo’s salary and ESPN’s strong interest in signing him, CBS altered its strategy midway through negotiations.
Manning has long been a highly sought-after figure for NFL television, but CBS sought to replace Romo with Manning as Jim Nantz’s partner for the Super Bowl.
Amid negotiations with Romo, CBS presented Manning with a contract believed to be valued between $10 million and $12 million annually for a duration of five to six years, according to sources.
Manning, known for his methodical approach, took his time considering the offer.
With Manning not committing and with CBS set to host the Super Bowl next year, along with upcoming negotiations for a new NFL TV deal, CBS doubled down on Romo, whom they were keen on retaining.
This move prevented ESPN from proceeding with its intended offer of $140 million over 10 years, sources say. Had Romo become a free agent, ESPN might have offered more.
On Friday, the agreement with Romo was finalized when CBS Sports Chairman Sean McManus and Division President David Berson reached a deal with Romo’s CAA agents, Tom Young and R.J. Gonser.
The magnitude of Romo’s contract required significant collaboration from ViacomCBS’s top leadership, led by Chairwoman Shari Redstone and President Bob Bakish.
