Russell Martin has informed Celtic and other interested parties that Southampton will do everything possible to retain Alex McCarthy. The England-capped goalkeeper’s contract at St Mary’s expires this summer, and he has been linked with a potential move to Scotland. Brendan Rodgers, seeking a replacement for Joe Hart following his retirement after the Scottish Cup Final win over Rangers, has shown interest in McCarthy among other candidates.
McCarthy’s season had been largely frustrating, with him spending much of it off the field. However, he was called back into action last month due to Gavin Bazunu’s injury. At 34, McCarthy played a crucial role in Southampton’s promotion to the Premier League, notably keeping a clean sheet in the 1-0 play-off final victory against Leeds United at Wembley.
Martin stresses McCarthy’s importance and the club’s desire to keep him for the next season, hoping his recent performances and experience will convince him to stay at Southampton despite interest from other clubs.
