Providence College announced on April 5th that Kim English, the head coach of the men’s basketball team, has agreed to a six-year contract extension. This decision was jointly announced by College President Fr. Kenneth Sicard, O.P., and Vice President/Athletics Director Steve Napolillo.
Expressing his gratitude, Coach English acknowledged the support from Fr. Sicard and Napolillo, emphasizing his commitment to the college, its athletes, and the wider community. He highlighted the overwhelming support from fans, donors, and the community during the past season as a key motivator for future success and expressed his excitement about the upcoming years and the pursuit of championships.
In his debut season at Providence, English led the Friars to a 21-14 overall record and a 10-10 record in the BIG EAST conference. Remarkably, he became the first coach in the college’s history to win 20 games in his inaugural season. The team secured six quad-one victories and reached the NIT. Notably, junior Devin Carter was honored as the BIG EAST Player of the Year, and Josh Oduro received an All-BIG EAST Honorable Mention.
Father Sicard praised English for his exceptional leadership and ability to inspire his team despite challenges, expressing confidence in English’s long-term commitment to the program. Napolillo echoed this sentiment, affirming that English is an ideal fit for Providence College and commending his leadership and teaching capabilities. The extension reflects the college’s strengthened commitment to English and his staff as they aim for future BIG EAST Championships.
Before joining Providence in 2023, English had a coaching record of 55-43 over three seasons, achieving 20 or more victories in each of the last two. His coaching career began as an assistant at the University of Tulsa under Frank Haith, followed by stints at Colorado with Tad Boyle and Tennessee under Rick Barnes.
