Lisa Bluder, the long-standing head coach of the Iowa Hawkeyes women’s basketball team, has announced her retirement following an illustrious 40-year coaching career, with 24 of those years spent at the University of Iowa. During her time at Iowa, Bluder achieved notable successes, including leading the team to two Final Four appearances and securing multiple Big Ten championships. Her influence was profound, extending beyond the court as she significantly developed the program and mentored numerous athletes.

 

Bluder’s decision to retire stemmed from personal reflection and a desire to dedicate more time to her family. Her announcement was received with widespread admiration and gratitude from the Iowa community and others. Under her leadership, the Hawkeyes rose to national prominence, highlighted by recent consecutive appearances in the national championship game. Her legacy is underscored by numerous accolades, such as being named Naismith Coach of the Year in 2019.

 

Following her retirement, Jan Jensen, Bluder’s long-time associate head coach, was appointed as the new head coach. Jensen, who has been Bluder’s colleague for over 20 years at both Iowa and Drake University, is expected to bring continuity and a deep understanding of the program’s culture and values. Athletic Director Beth Goetz lauded Bluder’s contributions, highlighting her significant impact on women’s basketball and the University of Iowa.
