The Cronulla Sharks have solidified their position at the top of the NRL ladder after a thrilling 38-30 victory over the Sydney Roosters in an exhilarating display of offensive football from both teams.
This match, highly anticipated as the highlight of Magic Round, did not disappoint. Featuring the league’s two highest-scoring offenses, it delivered on all fronts and confirmed Cronulla’s status as serious contenders for the premiership.
“They absolutely are the real deal,” commented Corey Parker on Fox League post-match. Roosters captain James Tedesco echoed this sentiment, stating, “they proved why they are top of the table.”
With the return of Nicho Hynes from a calf injury, the Sharks started the game perfectly, scoring on their first set right after the kick-off. Hynes’ decision to pass down the right flank instead of kicking initiated a 70-meter play. Quick passes along the sideline broke through the Roosters’ defense, leading to a dropped chip kick by Dom Young near the Roosters’ line. Will Kennedy seized the opportunity, scoring for the Sharks within the first 60 seconds.
The Roosters quickly responded. A set restart in the middle of the field provided them with excellent field position, and their potent attack capitalized. Joseph Suaalii’s brilliant flick pass enabled Dom Young to score his 50th try in just 59 games. Sydney then added a penalty to take a 10-8 lead, while Nicho Hynes declined a shot at goal for Cronulla.
Cronulla nearly scored immediately afterward, but Joseph Suaalii committed a professional foul by tackling Ronaldo Mulitalo improperly near the tryline.
