Former Canterbury Bulldogs and Wests Tigers player Brandon Wakeham has reportedly faced charges from the police in connection with a significant investigation concerning an alleged drug distribution scheme. As indicated by reports, Wakeham, presently under contract with the Blacktown Workers Sea Eagles, a feeder club for the Manly Sea Eagles, was apprehended following an article by The Sydney Morning Herald on Wednesday evening.
According to 9News Sydney, Wakeham has been accused of involvement in ‘large-scale drug distribution’ and is slated to appear in court after spending the night in police custody. It has been reported that two additional individuals were also charged subsequent to the discovery of 1 kilogram of MDMA and 56 grams of cocaine.
Despite being listed on the extended bench for the upcoming game against the Brisbane Broncos, Wakeham’s future participation is uncertain. Moreover, he was named at halfback for the NSW Cup, playing for the Blacktown Workers’ side against the Bulldogs.
This incident marks the second drug-related case involving an NRL player within recent weeks, following the charging of Cronulla Sharks player Braydon Trindall for a failed roadside test for alcohol and illicit drugs on April 22. Trindall, however, is poised to return this week after being included in the 22-man squad for their Magic Round clash against the Sydney Roosters.
The charges stem from a broader investigation known as Strike Force Verbena, led by the Drug and Firearms Squad in conjunction with the Australian Federal Police and the NSW Crime Commission. One individual, aged 47, faces multiple charges, including directing criminal group activities and drug supply, and was denied bail.
