It breaks his heart. Not a knee or leg, but a shoulder issue,” Shanahan told the journalists.Verrett, who San Francisco had anticipated would play a significant role in Week 18 against the Los Angeles Rams, will now be out for the next four to six months.

The 32-year-old Jason Verrett’s perseverance in overcoming obstacles has made him an example to the 49ers. The Farfield native, who was a 2014 Pro Bowler, has only appeared in 21 games since 2016. He signed on with the Red & Gold in 2021, but his season ended in injury in Week 1. QB Brock Purdy is among the 49ers’ starting lineup that will be rested on Sunday. Sam Darnold, San Francisco’s backup quarterback and the team’s third emergency quarterback, will take over for the Pro Bowl gunslinger for one week.

In addition, several Red & Gold players—including running back Christian McCaffrey—will be sidelined by injuries. “CMC” is taking the extra time off to thoroughly recuperate from a small calf injury that she sustained in Week 17. DT Arik Armstead, cornerback Ambry Thomas, and safeties Ji’Ayir Brown and Tashaun Gipson are joining him on the sidelines.
