Adrian Newey, widely regarded as the most accomplished Formula One car designer of modern times, is set to depart from Red Bull in early 2025.
This move paves the way for a potential collaboration with Lewis Hamilton at Ferrari, as the seven-time champion is slated to leave Mercedes to race for the Scuderia in the upcoming season.
Red Bull made the announcement regarding the 65-year-old’s departure on Wednesday, marking the end of his nearly two-decade tenure with the team. Since joining a year after Red Bull’s formation in 2006, Newey has played a pivotal role in steering the team to remarkable successes, with his car designs clinching seven drivers’ titles and six constructors’ championships for Red Bull.
Adrian Newey’s decision to leave Red Bull is a significant setback for the team, as his exceptional talents are highly coveted across the F1 paddock. It’s widely speculated that his next move will fulfill his ambition to collaborate with both Lewis Hamilton and Ferrari, which is considered his probable destination.
Despite a career marked by numerous successes, including five drivers’ titles with Williams in the early ’90s and two with McLaren later that decade, Newey expressed a desire to work with Hamilton and Ferrari. Ferrari’s eagerness to secure his services is evident, as they’ve reportedly made him their latest offer.
Money is unlikely to be a deterrent, with team principal Fred Vasseur engaging in discussions with Newey. This suggests his intention to remain active in F1 rather than retire. Joining Ferrari in 2025 would position him at the forefront of designing their car for the new regulations slated for 2026.
