Western Bulldogs coach Luke Beveridge has described Essendon ruckman Sam Draper’s remarks regarding potential player departures if Beveridge remained as “strange.” However, Beveridge remains unperturbed by the club’s assertions that Bailey Smith, a key midfielder recuperating from an ACL injury, is set to depart.
Draper faced criticism from both Essendon officials and teammates following his comments made on the Clubby Sports 200+ podcast, where he suggested that players might seek trades if Beveridge continued as coach. Draper’s assertion also included a prediction of Smith’s departure, despite his current contract status and ongoing recovery from injury.
On Thursday, Beveridge refrained from providing further details on his response but mentioned that individuals from the Essendon camp were “alarmed” enough to apologize, expressing his hope that none of his players would engage in similar behavior.
He emphasized the novelty of the situation, stating, “We broke new ground all the time, it was strange to me.” Beveridge indicated that those within Essendon who were close to Draper were greatly concerned and approached him to extend their apologies. However, he reiterated that his primary concern lies with the well-being and support of his players, particularly considering the intense scrutiny they face on a weekly basis. Beveridge admitted that such circumstances are uncommon but stressed the importance of ensuring his players are in a positive state.
